Himmler's War

Robert Conroy explores a fascinating “what if” in Himmler's war. What if Hitler had been accidentally killed during the latter stages of World War 2 and Himmler, the brutal head of the SS had assumed control of the Nazi war machine? How would the rest of the war – and indeed the 20^th Century – have panned out?

In Himmler's war, the new Führer, Heinrich Himmler, expands Germany's search for a super weapon. The Allies consider their options. Fight to the bitter end or negotiate peace with the new, more rational, NAZI leader? (Himmler actually listens to his generals, unlike his predecessor).

This is a very readable book, however Conroy sometimes stretches the bounds of possibility. Chris Nuttall, writing in the CGN book reviews blogspot, states that “[h]istorically, the German nuclear program was unable to produce a bomb. The idea that they can jump to building a working device – and then slipping it to Moscow to blow up Stalin – is implausible, to say the least”.

Hitler’s War

Harry Turtledove is one of the most prolific alternative history fiction writers. Hitler's war is the first book in his six book The war that came early series.

The basic premise of this novel is that World War 2 started one year earlier than in our timeline with the Munich Crisis of 1938. In  Hitler's war there was no appeasement with Germany and war was declared against her when Hitler's troops marched into the Sudetenlad in Czechoslovakia.

Published in 2009, Hitler's war tells the story through the perspective of several different characters including a Jewish girl in Germany, an American woman stranded in Germany as well as soldiers from all nationalities and sides.

This is a very readable book with The Library Journal's review stating that Turtledove's “mastery of the ever widening ripples that small changes make in history is unchallenged, his storytelling always gripping, and his research impeccable.” (Library Journal, August 1, 2009)
